I guess I’m successful: I have a “permanent academic job”, i.e. I’m a lecturer on a long-term contract, rather than having a research job that needs to change and move around every few years. At some point that stability is useful, but early in my career I really liked the moving around bit… I just wish I’d been able to do more living outside the UK! My job also pays pretty well, certainly for one that mostly involves doing what I want.

Much more important, though, is my feeling of well-being… and that’s much more determined by whether or not I feel that I’m doing a good job (and finding out interesting stuff). For that my job is really good: I get to teach, supervise, and solve problems for a lot of people, I get to work at the bleeding edge of human endeavour, and I get to learn new things and come up with new ideas all the time. So by that more important measure, I’m very happy with how things turned out… although I wish I had another couple of copies of myself to keep up with all the stuff I need & want to do!
