• Question: What will your job look like in 30+ years?

      I’m old and grumpy…and since I’m 40 now (!!!) in 30 years I darn well hope I’m happily retired, spending my remaining health on mountaineering, painting, and being an outrageous old man. And still playing drums, I hope. But I suspect that my subject will use a lot of “neural” computing ideas that can’t be written down in a short mathematical form — I am split in my opinion of these, because they are useful but it’s my job to *understand* things. Probably I will be old and grumpy about these kids with their new-fangled computer things 😉

      I think my job in 30 years will be quite similar, in that I’ll be using computers to see what comes out of smashing particles together at really high energies. However, these energies will be much higher and the computers will be completely different! In fact, what we call a computer might have drastically changed! Computers in 30+ years time might be completely unrecognisable to us now. Also, the techniques we use to get the most out of these computers will rapidly evolve. I can’t predict what the computers of the future will look like! (otherwise I’d be very rich)

      The field of nuclear medicine has moved so far in 30 years! Cancer treatments in general have come on massively too. Nowadays more than half of all people who get cancer survive it, whereas 30 years ago it was only around a quarter of people. Hopefully in another 30 years way more people will be beating cancer.

      I assume my research area will be quite similar. As long as cancer still exists, there will be ways to improve treatment for it so I’m sure people will still be looking for ways to optimise therapy and imaging of cancer.
