• Question: Android or Apple?

      Android. I had a Mac laptop for a while during my PhD: it was a nice, but expensive way to do email and web browsing. And everything was incompatible with everyone else… my wife has an iPhone, and yep: same story. I’ve got a cheapy, 3 year old, Android phone that does more, and I don’t freak if I drop it.

      For computers, I use Linux for everything, which is a bit of a pain sometimes but is mostly just great for someone who writes a lot of code, runs number-crunching programs and has hundreds of windows open at a time. Macs are a more awkward way to do the same thing, and Windows would just be impossible for my work. Particle physics seems to be about 60:40 Mac:Linux these days, and you can always tell a manager who isn’t doing science anymore because they’re running Windows and have a spreadsheet open!
