      Yes, very. It’s quite a privilege to be paid to work on understanding the universe, just because that’s the sort of thing that humanity should be doing. Hard work, but a privilege.

      (Particle physics does also lead to a lot of technology development and hence economic benefits, which is why governments pay to be part of it, but I’m mostly on the “just because” side of things.)

      Yes, but research is difficult and does require some perseverance. I sometimes come home frustrated and confused with my work, but this makes solving a problem even more enjoyable. You feel great when you finally figure something out that no-one else has before. I see myself as a kind of explorer but instead of exploring new places, I explore new materials! I don’ think I could get the same gratification from another job. 🙂

      Yes! There’s something really special when you find out something that nobody else has found out before, no matter how small this discovery might be… It feels amazing to be able to say you’re the world expert on that something!

      Yes, 100%. I feel very lucky to be paid to do something I care about and enjoy! It has it’s ups and downs but overall I wouldn’t do anything else.
