Maybe Neal Stephenson. His writing *style* isn’t the best, but his books are great fun and bubble with ideas. Cryptonomicon is a great introduction, before you hit the 2000-page Baroque Cycle. For style, I really enjoyed reading books by James Ellroy (the “LA Quartet”), and Jeff Noon (“Vurt” and others in that world). And for both style and ideas, Iain Banks: The Crow Road, and pretty much all his sci-fi novels are wonderful.
I really like Carl Sagan’s book “Contact”, in which humanity establishes a communication with extraterrestrial life. Carl Sagan was an amazing scientist, communicator of science and decided to write a book. Up to you whether he counts as an author 😉
